Laws Related to Impurity in the Syafi'i School

Understanding

Najis in language means something that is dirty and disgusting, whereas according to the term Syafi'iyah scholars, unclean is defined as something that is considered dirty by the Shari'a and can prevent the validity of prayer. Ibn Hajar al-Haitami (w 974 H) in the book Tuhfatu al-Muhtaj says:

"Unclean according to Shari'at is something dirty that can prevent the validity of prayer in a state where there is no rukhshah"1

In a state where there is no rukhsah, it means that under normal circumstances, as for someone who has rukhshah, such as a beser, then that person is still valid to pray even though there is impurity in his pants.

Unclean objects

Impure objects here include inanimate objects and living things. Sheikh Abdul Hamid al-Syirwani (w 1301 H) in his hasyiah said:

“Know that these objects can be (in the form of) inanimate objects and can be animals. All inanimate objects are pure except for what is stipulated by the Shari'a for their impurity, that is what Mushanif (Ibn Hajar al-Haitami) mentioned in his words "every intoxicating liquid (is unclean)". Likewise, every animal is sacred except for (animals) that are excluded by the Shari'a." 2

From the explanation above, it can be understood that an object can be called unclean only because there is information from the Shari'a, not based on dirt or disgust from a human point of view. These unclean objects in the Shafi'i school of thought can be grouped into seven. Imam Nawawi (d 676 H) said:

“The uncleanness is in the form of every intoxicating liquid, dogs, pigs and their offspring, carcasses other than human carcasses, fish carcasses and locust carcasses, blood, pus, vomit, faeces, urine, madzi, wadzi, as well as semen other than human semen. according to the most authentic opinion (in the madzhab). My comment: the most valid opinion is that semen is pure, apart from dog semen and pig semen, or sperm from one of the two offspring, wallahu a'lam."
