José Manuel Calderón José Manuel Calderón is recognized as "the father of Bachata", with the recording of the first songs of Bachata on May 30, 1962, in studies of Radio Television Dominicana (Borracho love and conviction).

This early recording hardly be recognized as Bachata today. They were strongly influenced by Cuban Bolero as true love. In fact, music was not called bachata. Campesino called Bolero. He played with an acoustic guitar and was slower than the Bachata today. Cuban Bolero is a Latin version of Blues replete with themes like deception and lost love. One of the songs Calderon, Boracho love, even has a rhythm of waltz.

In 1967, Calderon traveled to the United States. When he returned to the Dominican Republic in 1972, he found that the Bachata music had earned a bad reputation and was associated with prostitution. Bachata also had stigmatized and marginalized as music for the poorer classes. Only one national broadcaster, Radio Guarachita, played music.

Popular music

Gradually, bachata evolved in style and popularity, burst into the international scene in 1992 when Juan Luis Guerra won a Grammy for his album Bachata Rosa. Suddenly, Bachata regained its lost legitimacy. However, since the days of Calderon, music had become faster and incorporated electronic sounds.
