Reggae as a musical genre has its origins in Jamaica and it became popular throughout the seventies in the rest of the British West Indies and communities of black immigrants from the islands in the United States, Britain and Central place to where they arrived migration movements of black workers in these islands since the nineteenth century to build railroads banana companies, the Panama Railroad and the Panama Canal construction.

After the founding of the Republic of Panama in 1903 and the construction of the Panama Canal an American colonial enclave became known as the Canal Zone in which they worked and many members of the community were established constituting its main and most loyal source emerges labor as they had the advantage of speaking the same language as Americans and as an element masters with whom Americans held more trusting relationships with any other group of workers in the Canal Zone. Many of those born in the Canal Zone obtained US citizenship and emigrated to the United States especially the City of New York, constituting a small community of bilingual Afro-Panamanians who dominate both the Spanish language and English in addition to retaining many customs and traditions brought the isthmus along with Afro-Caribbean customs inherited from their ancestors. In Panama the phenomenon that the community preserved for a long time many cultural elements in particular, the use of English in its dialectal variant of the Caribbean, gastronomy, religions and most importantly, their music, very popular is given by the way, especially calypso that eventually was also giving space to non-Panamanian West Indian origin to become popular performers, this would be a prelude of what would happen to the reggae.
