About Sultan Ahmed Blue Mosque

4K, HD, HQ Sultan Ahmed Mosque wallpapers

Sultan Ahmet Mosque was built by the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I between 1609 and 1617 on the historical peninsula in Istanbul by Architect Sedefkar Mehmed Ağa. It is called "The Blue Mosque" by Europeans because it is decorated with blue, green, and white Iznik tiles and because its half domes and the inside of its large dome are also decorated with blue-weighted pencil works. With the conversion of Hagia Sophia from a mosque to a museum in 1935, it became the main mosque of Istanbul.

In fact, the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, together with its social complex, is one of the most significant monuments in Istanbul. This complex consists of a mosque, madrasahs, sultan's pavilion, shops, Turkish bath, fountain, tomb, primary school, and rental rooms. Some of these structures have not survived to the present day.

The most striking architectural and artistic aspect of the Blue Mosque is that it is decorated with more than 20,000 Iznik tiles. Traditional plant motifs in yellow and blue tones were used in the decorations of these tiles, making the building more than just a place of worship. The place of worship of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque measures 64 x 72 meters. The 43-meter-high central dome has a diameter of 23.5 meters. The interior of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque is illuminated with more than 200 pieces of colored glass. His writings were written by Seyyid Kasım Gubari from Diyarbakir. It forms a complex with the surrounding structures, and the Sultan Ahmet Mosque is Turkey's first mosque with six minarets.

The design of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque is the pinnacle of the 200-year-old synthesis of Ottoman mosque architecture and Byzantine church architecture. Besides containing some Byzantine influences from its neighbor Hagia Sophia, traditional Islamic architecture also predominates and is seen as the last great mosque of the classical period. The architect of the Sultan Ahmet Mosque was successful in reflecting the ideas of Architect Sedefkar Mehmet Ağa of "majesty and splendor."

Except for the addition of small towers on the corner domes, the façade of the large forecourt was built in the same style as the façade of the Süleymaniye Mosque. The courtyard of the Süleymaniye Mosque is almost as wide as the mosque itself and is surrounded by an uninterrupted archway. There are ablutions on both sides. The sizeable hexagonal fountain in the middle is small, considering the dimensions of the courtyard. The narrow monumental passage opening towards the courtyard is architecturally different from the colonnade. Its half-dome is crowned with a smaller protruding dome and has a thin stalactite structure. Sultan Ahmet Mosque is one of the five mosques with six minarets in Turkey.
