Zen is the Japanese name for the Ch'an tradition, which emerged in China around the 7th century. Zen is often associated with Mahayana Buddhism. It was initially cultivated in China where it received Taoist influences and later migrated to Japan, Vietnam and Korea. The basic practice of Japanese Zen is zazen (literally, "meditate sitting"), a type of contemplative meditation that aims to lead the practitioner to the "direct experience of reality" through the observation of one's own mind.

As we know it today, it was only possible due to the strong influence that Buddhism in China suffered from Taoism. For some scholars, Zen is a synthesis of these two currents of thought (Buddhism and Taoism).

Zen emphasizes rigorous self-control, the practice of meditation, insight into the nature of the mind (見性, Ch. jiànxìng, Jp. kensho, "realizing the true nature") and the nature of things, and the personal expression of this insight in life everyday life, especially for the benefit of others. As such, it does not emphasize mere knowledge of sutras and doctrine and favors direct understanding through spiritual practice and interaction with a realized teacher or master.
